I’ve been a working member of the media since the day I arrived in Athens, Georgia. Within my first few months as a college student, I secured positions with the Athens Banner-Herald and Scout.com’s Dawg Post to help with their UGA athletics coverage. From the first two positions, I climbed my way up inside the beat. My roles within those organizations began to evolve as my editors added photography and video work to my responsibilities. From there, I also took the reins of all of Dawg Post’s social media accounts, growing them by thousands of followers while also producing the content that it distributed.
Soon, other outlets on the beat began to take notice of my work. In my second year, I began contributing work to 247.com, The Savannah Morning News and The Augusta Chronicle. By year three, I was producing several stories a week for the state’s largest paper – The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. As my workload grew from other media outlets, I still held my earlier responsibilities as well. Each week, I was writing multiple stories, creating video packages, taking photos, recording and editing podcasts and then sharing that all through the social media accounts I was in charge of.
It’s under those organizations where I’ve gained most of my experience, but it isn’t where I got my start as a working media member. My career started in the trenches, covering high school sports in my hometown of Austin, Texas (Which explains my love for barbecue and Mexican food) for the local paper, the Austin American-Statesman. I’ve come a long way since those days. No longer am I keeping my own stats by hand. I have covered more than 40 Georgia football games, including games on some of the biggest stages in all of college football: three SEC Championships, the Rose Bowl, the National Championship and two Sugar Bowls.
